Overview
Wheat may be damaged by the effects of fungal diseases such as fusarium head blight (FHB) which causes the kernels to appear white, chalky or shriveled. Fusarium damaged grain requires mycotoxin testing to determine if the grain is within safety limits.
On a per kernel basis, the SPY provides a rapid screening tool for verifying the presence or absence of fusarium damaged kernels, and for quantifying the amount of sound kernels.
This is not a replacement for mycotoxin testing.
The image at left contains a mixture of sound and damaged kernels. When the measurement is taken, red ovelays are applied to the sound kernels and blue overlays indicate fusarium damaged kernels. Touching kernels are excluded from the measurement and therefore do not have any colored overlays. Each kernel is identified and reported in the graph as:
Fusarium % - fusarium damaged red wheat kernels as percent of total kernels
