Overview
Malting barley received at the country elevator is evaluated for quality and graded accordingly. On a per kernel basis, the SPY determines
kernel damage such as black point, moldy, 2-4D, and classifies kernels as skinned and broken, immature/thin, foreign kernels and wild oats. Barley color is also measured on each kernel.
Malting Barley D&D Results
The image at left contains a mixture of sound and damaged kernels. When the measurement is taken, red ovelays are applied to the whole kernel and white overlays indicate areas of surface damage.
Touching kernels are excluded from the measurement and therefore do not have any colored overlays.
D&D% is determined on a per kernel basis and the results are grouped in a 2-bar graph with 3% chosen as acceptable/unacceptable
Since kernels with varying amounts of D&D are similar in weight (density), the y-axis value (% kernels) is equal to % weight of kernels.
At a glance, the 2-bar graph shows over 60% of the kernels have more than 3% damage. A 10-bar graph can also be displayed.
